I am the Programme Manager for the Mathematics and Computer Science MSc at the University of Leeds. I also teach and do research in the School of Mathematics. The main area of research that I am interested in is the modular representation theory of algebraic groups. This has connections with representation theory for the symmetric groups.

I am a lecturer in applied mathematics, and the programme director for our MSc in Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics. I review applications for the course, help students choose a suitable package of modules when they arrive in Leeds, and keep in touch thereafter to ensure that students are satisfied with their progress. In some years I teach one of the core modules of the MSc in semester two (Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics), and act as supervisor for some of the summer research projects. I am happy to answer questions from potential applicants about the course.

Away from these duties, I research the fluid dynamics of the Earth's atmosphere and ocean. This typically involves developing simplified mathematical models of physical processes and running appropriate computer simulations, in order to help explain observed dynamical phenomena. For example, at the moment I am quite involved in modelling ocean tides.

I am the Programme Manager for the MMATH, BSc Mathematics and the MSc Mathematics. My research interests range widely, from pure mathematical topics to more applied themes.

On the pure side I am working with Banach spaces of analytic functions, including the classical Hardy spaces. Associated with these are special classes of linear operators, particularly Hankel, Toeplitz and composition operators. Other research topics concern interpolation in function spaces, invariant subspaces of operators and semigroups of operators.

On the applied side, I am interested in systems and control theory (particularly infinite-dimensional systems): here I have been working on delay systems and fractional systems, and also on questions of controllability, observability and admissibility. Analytic approximation methods are used in identification problems, including inverse problems for partial differential equations. Finally, an old interest, namely rational approximation (model reduction), also resurfaces occasionally.

My research interest are in the development of statistical methods and inference in the field of statistical bioinformatics, biology, medicine, statistical genetics, genetic epidemiology, chemometrics, and high-dimensional data.

My research interests evolve around probability, stochastic processes and their applications in the broad area of Financial and Actuarial Mathematics.  

In particular, my work up to now has been in the area of stochastic control for mean-variance type problems.  

Using perhaps the most celebrated criterion for financial decision making, mean-variance control problems present challenges due to the non-linear variance term. The corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations are usually degenerate and solutions together with optimal strategies difficult to obtain. My contribution to the field includes solutions in Sobolev Spaces, viscosity solutions and numerical solutions.  

These results have applications in Financial Mathematics, Financial Economics, Insurance and Pensions.  

I am also interested in asset modelling for pension funds and modelling the dependence structure in multi-asset financial products.
