A quick guide to München
This is a quick personal guide to München. I spent almost two years there. So I try to list a few of the places
which I like most. There are no links but you get more information about most places using a search engine like
Google.
Museums etc.
- Deutsches Museum
Museumsinsel 1. A famous museum for all sciences. It has a section on mathematics and on computers.
- Lenbachhaus
Luisenstrasse 33. A wonderful fairly small art gallery. It is most famous for its collection from the
school "Blauer Reiter".
- Pinakothek der Moderne
Barer Strasse 40. A very ambitious art gallery which complements the classical galleries "Alte Pinakothek"
and "Neue Pinakothek". It was opened very recently (just in time before the general election).
- Müllersches Volksbad
Rosenheimer Strasse 1. A public swimming pool from the Jugendstil period. It is located opposite the Deutsche Museum.
Inside one finds a nice cafe.
- Herz-Jesu Kirche
Lachnerstrasse 8 (Neuhausen). An exceptional piece of architecture, not far from the Nymphenburger Schloss.
It was opened just a few years ago after the old wooden building burnt down. The new construction is made
from steel and glass but uses wood inside.
Cafes, Restaurant etc.
- Spatenhaus an der Oper
Residenzstrasse 12. Good bavarian food and beer.
- Pfälzer Weinstube
Residenzstrasse 1. Good wine and simple food. Not fancy, but good atmosphere.
- Bohne und Malz
Sonnenstr. 11 (Entrance from Herzogspitalstrasse).
A place for beer (Malz) and coffee (Bohne). Has also good food.
- Prinz Myshkin
Hackenstrasse 2. An excellent vegetarian restaurant.
- Cafe am Beethovenplatz
Goethestr. 51. Vienna Style Kaffeehaus. Traditional place with nice atmosphere and excellent food.
- Kaffeehaus Dukatz
Salvatorplatz 1. Located in the Literaturhaus. Bohemian style cafe.
- Schelling-Salon
Schellingstrasse 54 (Schwabing). Historic pub which seems completely unchanged. It is a good contrast to all the
stylish cafes in Schwabing. Don't try the food.
- Reitschule
Königinstr.34 (Schwabing). Cafe, restaurant, bar. Beautiful
historic building, the former school for riding, closed to the
university.
- Stadtcafe - im Stadtmuseum
St.-Jakobs-Platz 1. Convenient location. Has coffee and food.
- Voila
Wörthstr 5 (Haidhausen). Very popular cafe and cocktail bar. Good and reasonably priced food. Happy hour
11 pm until 1am.
- Fraunhofer
Fraunhofer Strasse 9 (Glockenbachviertel).
A traditional place what germans call "Kneipe" (casual atmosphere). Has bavarian food.
- Nil
Hans-Sachs-Strasse 2 (Glockenbachviertel). Bar and restaurant, popular among gay people. Open until 3 am.
Many more gay places in
the same neighbourhood.
- Unterfahrt
Einsteinstrasse 42. Located in a huge cellar. The place for Jazz in München.
- Pascha Club
Rosenheimer Str. 145 h. Famous night club. You might meet Boris Becker there. Many more clubs at
"Kunstpark Ost" (Grafinger Str. 6).
Shopping
- Viktualienmarkt
The famous open market in München.
- Fünf Höfe
Between Theatinerstrasse, Salvatorstrasse, and Maffeistrasse.
Fancy shopping arcades. Rebuild (interesting architecture) and opened fairly recently.
A shop worth noticing is "Manufactum" which offers old fashioned quality goods.
- Kaufingerstrasse
A reasonable shopping street.
- Hugendubel
Marienplatz 22. The biggest book store. Has various other locations.
- Dallmayr
Dienerstrasse 14-15. A famous place for delicatessen. Claims to have more visitors than Schloss Neuschwanstein.
Software
- sd&m AG
Müchen is the centre of the IT business in Germany. One of the most respected
software companies is sd&m. It produces high profits even after September 11.
Public Transport
- Fare
The scheme for computing the correct fare is incomprehensible. Don't try to understand it.
A potential pitfall is the concept to have different types of zones.
So there are different zones, of course, but there are also different types.
- Airport
Take the S8 to get directly from the airport to Ostbahnhof (and back). Other trains take longer.
