Half term challenges 2010

Last year's half term challengeThe half term challenge is a maths competition for pupils in Yorkshire and the Humber to complete at home during February half term. This year there are two competitions being run by the Further Mathematics support programme at the University of Leeds and the Yorkshire Branch of the Mathematical Association.

Information for teachers

The Half Term Challenge is aimed at mathematically able and enthusiastic pupils in Years 7 and 8, whilst the Senior Half Term Challenge is aimed at similar pupils in Years 9 and 10.

You can download the question papers here:

Please distribute to your pupils in time for them to attempt the challenges over the February half term holiday.

Please remind your pupils of the following points:

1) Their entry must be their own work, though of course they may ask for help on how to start or for the meanings of unfamiliar words.
2) Entries without any working out at all or written on the Half Term Challenge / Senior Half Term Challenge sheet will not be marked.
3) It is possible to win a prize even if they have not completed all of the questions, so hand in their entry even if it is not quite finished.
4) They must write their name and school in neat writing on every page.

Once you have received your pupils’ entries, please fill their names in on the mark sheet which you can download here:

Mark your envelope(s) “Half Term Challenge ‘10 Entries” or “Senior Half Term Challenge ‘10 Entries” as appropriate.

All of the prizes will be awarded at an evening of mathematical enrichment at the University of Leeds on Wednesday 19th May 2010.

Last year’s Competition

The 2009 competition was run by the More Maths Grads Project in Yorkshire and the Humber with questions again supplied by Mathematical Education on Merseyside. We had 924 entries and over 50 winners attended a celebration evening at the university with their families. They had the chance to enjoy some mathematical enrichment provided by the FunMaths Roadshow and the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust before being presented with their awards.

The Origin of the Competition

We thank Mathematical Education on Merseyside (MEM) for providing the questions and the concept of the Challenge Competition.
