Dugald Macpherson Programme Manager MSc Mathematics and Computer Science

Professor Dugald Macpherson
Programme Manager
MSc Mathematics and Computer Science

I am the Programme Manager for the Mathematics and Computer Science MSc at the University of Leeds. I also teach and do research in the School of Mathematics. My research is in model theory (mathematical logic), on the border between logic, algebra, and combinatorics. Mathematical logic has many interactions with computer science.
I also coordinate the 11-partner EU-funded Mare Curie Initial Training Network MALOA, which funds PhD-level training in a range of areas of mathematical logic.

Dr Stephen Griffiths Programme Manager MSc Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics

Dr Stephen Griffiths
Programme Director
MSc Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics

I am a lecturer in applied mathematics, and the programme director for our MSc in Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics. I review applications for the course, help students choose a suitable package of modules when they arrive in Leeds, and keep in touch thereafter to ensure that students are satisfied with their progress. I teach one of the core modules of the MSc in semester two (Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics), and act as supervisor for some of the summer research projects. I am happy to answer questions from potential applicants about the course.

Away from these duties, I research the fluid dynamics of the Earth's atmosphere and ocean. This typically involves developing simplified mathematical models of physical processes and running appropriate computer simulations, in order to help explain observed dynamical phenomena. For example, at the moment I am quite involved in modelling ocean tides.

Stuart Barber Programme Manager for MSc Statistics and MSs Statistics with Applications to Finance

Dr Stuart Barber
Postgraduate Admissions Tutor
MSc Statistics
MSc Statistics with Applications to Finance

Statistics has two meanings; here at Leeds we both develop new statistical methods and get involved with many interdisciplinary research projects. The compact nature of the Leeds campus makes it easy to meet and work with colleagues from many different departments.

One of the great things about working in Statistics is the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in many different areas.  Using the kind of statistical methods taught in our programmes, I have recently been involved with projects in gynaecology, cancer research, drug metabolism, manufacturing insulation materials, promoting the use of "green" technology, and the changing patterns of spoken English accents.
