How to apply
Entry requirements
The School offers full-time PhD and MSc programmes but also considers applications from those wishing to study on a part-time basis. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
PhD candidates must have, or expect to achieve a first or good upper second class honours degree, or equivalent in a subject relevant to the programme of study. For an MSc by Research you must have a good upper second class degree.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of a language qualification before registration as a postgraduate student. For PhD study the School of Mathematics will accept the following qualifications and scores:
- IELTS - an overall band of 6.0 with no individual skill band below 5.5 in all components
- iBT TOEFL - (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 87 overall with Listening 20; Reading 20; Speaking 22; Writing 21.

Application process
When you are apply for a PhD programme there are three steps that you need to take.
1) Choose which programme of study you would like to apply for. We recommend that you take a closer look at the research areas and projects that are available on the Project opportunities page.
2) Complete an application form online or download a paper version (requests to rp_applications@leeds.ac.uk):
You must enter your choice of proposed supervisor and research area(s) in order of preference on the application form in Section K ‘Research Information’. You are also welcome to indicate specific research projects that particularly interest you.
Applications for research degrees are accepted all year but there are deadlines in connection with Leeds University scholarship competitions – please contact maths-phd@leeds.ac.uk for more information
3) Provide supporting documentation. In addition to your application form we must see original (or copy) versions of the following:
- Your degree qualifications
- Transcripts of your academic records showing detailed marks in courses you have taken
- A minimum of two academic references in support of your application((if these are not provided by you then we will contact the referees listed on your application asking them to email their reference direct to us) )
