Dr Thomas Wagenknecht
Postgraduate Research Tutor - Applied Mathematics

In my role I am mainly responsible for postgraduate research students in the Department of Applied Mathematics. I am involved in the Admissions process, offer advice to students, monitor their progress and help to coordinate the assessment.

I am a member of the Applied Nonlinear Dynamics group and organise the group seminars. In my research I am interested in analysing bifurcations and localised phenomena in nonlinear dynamical systems.

Michael Rathjen

Professor Michael Rathjen
Postgraduate Research Tutor - Pure Mathematics

I coordinate the postgraduate research student admissions process for Pure Mathematics, including finding a supervisor for every applicant, making decisions on who we make offers to and how to distribute funding.
I also share overall responsibility for the postgraduate programme in mathematics with the other postgraduate research tutors in the School of Mathematics.

Oversight of our postgraduate research programme is only a part of my work at Leeds; I also have a research group and teach  undergraduate and postgraduate courses. My research is in the area of mathematical logic, specifically proof theory and constructive set theory. A central  central theme of proof theory is the classification of theories by means of transfinite ordinals that measure their 'consistency strength' and 'computational power'.
