## Research interests

As a theoretical physicist working in the School of Mathematics, I am interested in mathematically modelling the physical world, to discover the simple principles governing complex systems.

With my research students, I study the statistical principles that link the physics of microscopic particles to the large-scale properties of the structures and materials that they form. The same principles of statistical physics govern clusters of proteins in the body and globular clusters of stars.

Much of my recent research has been on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, soft matter physics and the development of new methods of analysis. Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics is a very broad topic, with applications ranging from the flow of molten plastics to Darwinian evolution.

As well as publishing new research in academic journals, I think it is important to make science more accessible to improve the public understanding of science.
