Your visit can be tailored on request to include a range of activities. These could include a sample lecture, a hands on workshop, a tour of campus and a more general activity relating to higher education.

Leeds Festival of Science

Year group: Y5-13

Every year the University welcomes over 3000 school pupils from the region to take part in a wide variety of fun-filled science and maths activities, ranging from workshops on slime to panning for gold. All the events are designed to inspire an interest in science, mathematics and engineering and to show that exploring the world around you can be an exciting and rewarding activity.

Leeds University Pop Maths Quiz

Year Group: Y7- 8

The Pop Maths Quiz is a fun quiz with mathematical questions suitable for Year 7 and 8. Teams can have up to 6 pupils from Year 7 or 8. The Quiz will be followed by a Prize Giving.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are arguably some of the most important subjects in today’s world. Visit the University for a day and choose a selection of workshops to suit your pupils from a list covering all the STEM subjects.

Enrichment events

Year group: Y10-11

The Further Maths Support Programme hold enrichment events for year 10/11 students throughout the region. E.g. one in Hull last year for year 11 students included talks titled ‘The Maths of Music’, ‘Join the Dots’, ‘The Maths of Codes’ and ‘Juggling’.  Details of the next events can be found here

The programme will also go into schools to give short talks to year 10/11 students to encourage the choice of A level Mathematics (and/or A level Further Mathematics).

Enrichment event

University Mathematics in Perspective

Year group: Y12-13
Date: 27 - 29 June 2012

This three-day residential course for sixth form students, provides an introduction to student life and mathematics at the University of Leeds. We offer you a sneak preview of university life plus an insight into how mathematics develops at degree level. Our University tutors will extend and enrich your existing study of mathematics at A-level (or equivalent) through a series of talks.

Mechanics Day

Year group: Y12-13

There is an annual Mechanics Day at the University of Leeds where year 12/13 students are given a practical introduction to some higher Mechanics topics. During the day students mathematically model different situations whilst rotating around a series of experiments which practically demonstrate mechanics in action.

A level Maths/Further Mathematics revision and STEP classes

Year Group: Y12-13

The Further Maths Support Programme run revision days at the University for A level Maths/Further Maths modules. We held one for the Further Pure 1 module on the 12th May.

We also run weekly STEP help classes. These start in October and continue throughout the school term time until the examination in June.

Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses

These special Masterclasses are by invitation only* and are designed to stimulate and encourage pupils in the art and practice of Mathematics. They cover topics which are not normally taught in schools as part of the syllabus.

*All schools in the Leeds area are contacted in the autumn term about arrangements for the classes held in January and February.

This annual teachers’ conference provides an interface between the School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds and teachers in schools and sixth forms.

Teachers and university staff alike are given a rare opportunity to exchange valuable experiences and re-invigorate their perspectives on the ever-changing world of mathematics education.
