Composer in Residence

4 August 2011

The School is hosting the residency of the composer Eleri Pound for ten months from February 2011

Eleri plans to compose four pieces of music during the residency, each reflecting a different mathematical idea, as well as creating wall displays, a website, and having input into the joint honours mathematics and music programme. The project is funded by the Leverhulme Trust Artist-in-Residence scheme.

Eleri Pound was a joint honours undergraduate at Leeds in Maths & Music. After graduating she stayed at Leeds and completed her practice-based research PhD in composition in 2008. Eleri is interested in exploring ways of using mathematical concepts to create pre-compositional material and compositional structures. She has an interest in alternative tuning systems and the notational and practical problems associated with the use of these. Eleri is also a harpist, involved in performance of new music and is interested in the historical development of the harp, including the exploration of contemporary music written for the harp.
