Top tips and advice

When you are trying to work out what kind of career you might be interested in taking the first steps can sometimes be a little daunting. Here are some of our top tips to help you get started:

  • Start exploring your options early - even as early as your first year into your degree.
  • Attend careers events and fairs and ensure you take up any opportunities to engage with potential employers. Don't be shy - prepare a few questions - this is something which our Careers Centre can help you with.
  • Get some work experience through a summer job, internship, or industrial placement through our Industrial Placement scheme.
  • Make sure you complete personal tutorial forms before each meeting with your personal tutor as they will be the first person you will ask for references for your future employer.

There are plenty of career opportunities out there so take your time and find out what will suit you.

Leeds for Life

The University also runs a scheme called 'Leeds for Life' the aim of which is to ensure that you make the most of your time here with us in Leeds. It is all about developing a range of skills and attributes both within your programme of study and through your additional activities. You will be encouraged to discuss ‘Leeds for Life’ with your Personal Tutor. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this scheme:

  • Keep a record of all career-relevant activities you have been involved in, and any career-relevant material you have produced. You can then save this information on the 'opportunities' section of your Leeds for Life web profile. This means that when the time comes for you to start thinking about your future career, everything will be readily available in one place.
  • Make sure that you take advantage of the career enhancing opportunities within the School such as the Peer Assisted Learning scheme. Leeds for Life details all of these opportunities for you under the 'School Opportunities' section of your profile webpage.
