MMath Mathematics

Why did you choose to study Mathematics?
Mathematics was my favourite subject at school so it just seemed the obvious choice to study it at University.

Did you visit us on an open day? Did you find that experience helpful in making your decision?
Yes, it was very helpful to visit the University before applying, especially since I had never even been to Leeds before the Open Day.

Has your course lived up to your expectations so far?
It has been a lot harder than I expected, but it’s also been a lot more fun than I thought it would be!

What do you enjoy most about your course?
This course has so many contact hours that you get to know your course mates really well.

Which aspect of Mathematics do you find the most interesting?
I’m really enjoying the Financial Mathematics module; a lot of Maths modules are really abstract but this one is applicable to the real world.

How would you describe your lecturers and tutors?
They are all really friendly and approachable, but the learning style is so different to what I was used to from school, it took a bit of adjusting to.

Have you taken advantage of the flexibility of your course and enrolled in any discovery modules outside of Mathematics?
This semester I have taken 2 electives: a Criminal Law module, and a Business module.  Both are really interesting and since they are both essay based I will have less exams in the summer! The course content is so different to that of Mathematics… it’s a welcome break from all the numbers!

Have you joined any clubs and societies on campus?
Yes, this year I am Treasurer of the Maths Society, Social Secretary of the Trading and Investment Society and a member of RAG (Raise and Give). There are lots of clubs and societies here, I really recommend getting involved with them!

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying to your course?
As long as you are prepared to put in a lot of hard work, it will be worth it.  I may be biased but the University of Leeds is a great place to study and I am so glad I came here!
